Mastering the Behavioural Interview

Behavioural interviewing relies on the principle that past behaviour predicts future behaviour. Research has shown that the predictive validity of behavioural-based interviews is higher than traditional non-structured or situational interviews. Although this interview technique has been around for many years, it seems to be common practice among most employment recruiters in this day and age. Because of this fact, it is especially important to come prepared to a behavioural based interview.

First, you must understand what your potential employer is seeking in an employee. You should identify the specific competencies required for the position in which you have applied. These competencies are typically outlined within the job advertisement itself among the description of skills and qualifications necessary for the position. Examples of competencies could include: communication skills, leadership qualities, team building skills, stress management skills, decision-making and problem-solving skills etc.

Second, you should develop some impressive stories that can be linked to each specific competency that you have outlined among the job advertisement. Verbalize your stories using a method known as STAR. This commonly employed strategy helps to deal with these precise types of interview questions. The acronym is defined as follows:

S = Situation: Briefly describe the situation.
T = Task: What were you trying to achieve?
A = Action: What did you do to achieve your results?
R = Result: What were the results?

And as the saying goes; practice makes perfect, so why not set up a mock interview with a friend? It will not only allow you to voice your responses out loud, but it will allow you to gain some real feedback before the actual interview takes place. To get started, here are some examples of common behavioral based interview questions:
  • Describe a time when you were faced with a stressful situation that demonstrated your coping skills.

  • Give me a specific example of a time when you used good judgment and logic in solving a problem.

  • Give me an example of a time when you set a goal and were able to meet or achieve it.

  • Give me a specific example of a time when you had to conform to a policy with which you did not agree.

  • Tell me about a time when you had too many things to do and you were required to prioritize your tasks.

  • Describe a situation in which you had to deal with conflict.

  • Tell me about a difficult decision you've made in the last year.

  • Give me an example of when you showed initiative and took the lead.

  • Tell me about a recent situation in which you had to deal with a very upset customer or co-worker.

  • Give me an example of a time when you motivated others.

  • Tell me about a time when you delegated a project effectively.

  • Give me an example of a time when you used your fact-finding skills to solve a problem.

  • Describe a time when you anticipated potential problems and developed preventive measures.

Good luck!

The Cover Letter: Getting Your Foot in the Door

Your cover letter is the initial evaluation of your skills, your résumé, and your personality both as a worker and as a person. Your cover letter should remain brief and simple, but clear and concise. This may seem contradictory, but it the key is to wow your potential employer quickly so that he/she will review your résumé and hopefully request an interview.

Your cover letter should...
  • quickly introduce yourself and the position that you are applying for

  • describe your skills and how they can be applied to the company you are applying to

  • include a closing statement about your desire for an interview

In the first section, you must make sure that it clearly states the position that you are applying. You should indicate where you noticed the advertisement and make certain to include any reference numbers for the position or job advertisement.

In the second section, you should focus on describing your skills and work experience. It is important that you highlight and discuss your skills and experience as they relate to the job advertisement. You don't need to include all of your skills and experience, because your résumé will describe them in greater detail. Tell the potential employer what you will bring to the company, but do not overload your cover letter with non-essential information.

The final section of your cover letter deals with how they can contact you. Make sure you list the various methods of contacting you and that all your contact information is accurate.

A few writing tips:
  • Do not include long paragraphs and complicated sentence structure. Your cover letter will likely only be briefly scanned for key words and job specific skills and experience which should not get buried.

  • Keep your cover letter professional by using a plain font on white, crisp paper.

  • Do not exceed one page.

  • Re-read it several times to make sure that it includes all relevant information relating to the job advertisement, that it is free of spelling and grammatical errors, and that it includes your correct contact information.

The Scannable Résumé: 10 Easy Steps

What is a scannable résumé?

It is a document that can be successfully scanned using certain technology such as a graphic image, which then converts it back to text. This enables employers to receive your hard-copy résumé, place your it into a database, and retrieve it later. These databases are designed to allow the employer to search and select possible candidates based on nouns and keywords found within your résumé.

Formatting your résumé to a scannable version has never been easier:

1. Copy the entire MS Word résumé.
2. Paste the document into Notepad.
3. Click on 'Format' and uncheck the 'Word Wrap' feature.
4. Save your document as a .txt file in Notepad for future use.
5. Replace all bullets with asterisks (*) or dashes (-)
6. Make sure your name, phone number and email address are all on separate lines from the rest of your résumé and that your name is located on the first line.
7. Keep your document, including dates, justified to the left.
8. Convert the entire document to Courier font.
9. Use keywords and verbatim wording from the job description (that way, the scanner will pick them up). Support the skills with your work experience.
10. Save all of your changes and voilà.
